Someone get out the gas axe and cut down those bloody steel poles. If they need a cover there a tent would have been safer. * shakes head in sadness and discussed.-3
WOW THERE ARE SOME REALLY HEARTLESS CUNTS ON THIS FUCKING SITE. A "KID" 21 DIED FOR FUCK SAKE. NOT JUST ANY KID BUT AN OLYMPIC ATHLETE. SOMEONE WHO SPENT THE BEST PART OF HALF HIS LIFE TRAINING FOR THIS DAY. ONLY BECAUSE SOMEONE DID NOT DO THEY'RE JOB PROPERLY AND CONSIDER THIS PART OF THE TRACK A BAD DESIGN. HE IS NOW DEAD! GO ON CUNTS NEG AWAY IF THATS THE BEST YOU CAN OFFER NO WONDER THIS PLACE IS SO FUCKED UP.+20
and on top of that they said he was the only one to blame, because he took the turn to wide. In what a pathetic world do we live in ? Money over life and ALWAYS blame the dead guy
Fuck the Olympics, they are absolutely nothing more then a business+13
i concur. Olympics are great if your competing, really pathetic to watch due to commercialization. For the record, the company that designed the track had spec's for a top speed of 129 km/h, he was clocked at 145km/h (or near there) when he went up and over. Another luge'r hit 156km/h in that same spot. Somebody on the design end fucked up royally, and now this guy is unfortunately deceased. Sad, sad day for him and his family. RIP+1
Fuck the luge, its is a stupid "sport". I guess 8 people have died in its history. Honestly it is the only real reason why anybody watches people fly down an icy track......"maybe this dude will crash, hes really flyin". Even if you aren't explicitly thinking that, it is in your subconcious. It is a spectacle, just like NASCAR. It is messed up and retarded. Watch some sports that take some strategy, skill and physical talent....the olympics actually do have some of those, like hockey, speedskating, snowboarding, skiing.+2
I believe that might actually be more track up top. The track sits on top of its self. Probably for space reasons. Yes he took the turn wrong and it is a horrible tragedy. There are risk in everything we do. I am sure he was fully aware that this could happen at anytime. Saddly atleast he is dead and not a qaudrapalegic or even worse. People always llok to blame others for what happens to us. But we have to absorb most of the blame we should be responsible for our own actions. Is it right he died, NO could the track have been better designed, YES. But he made the choice to be who was and make that run that day. Does it mean you insult everyone for his tragedy. That is wrong on your part. AS for someone doing their job incorrectly, what are yourefering to. The tracks construction?? If so All them beams are probably needed. Due to weight and force applied from the luge at high rates of speed. The track didn't fall apart the operator mis calculated. This should really be about competition and negative results.+1
whats with the caps man? i hear ya on this one, but there is a reason why we are here, because we are all fucked up in some way. youtube is more suitable for you. or even ebaumsworld. have a nice day.+1
I'll sit here & eat humble pie. For the most part Catalin I agree with you on the commercialism of the Olympics, but from the pure athletic stand point it is a great achievement to be there. Thanks ill_sane for the tech on the track very interesting. joythief07 & ilovedetroit sorry for shouting, just a little tiered and emotional.
A young super athlete like this does not deserve your sarcasm and or comedy. He is dead in a very tragic accident competing in one of the WORLDS most prestigious events.+10
Very sad... Now if it were an animal the people on this site would be outraged.
On a lighter note. For this very reason I only do extreme sports in bed-3
A 21-year-old member of the Georgian team crashed during a practice run at one of the fastest points of the track in Canada, his body slamming into an unpadded support beam.
Nodar Kumaritashvili was knocked unconscious and immediately placed on a stretcher with blood pouring from his face before being air-lifted to hospital and pronounced dead.
An investigation into the crash by the Coroners Service of British Columbia, the police, and the International Luge Federation concluded that Kumaritashvili came late out of curve 15 and did not compensate properly.
Based on these findings the race director made the decision to re-open the track following a raising of the walls by half a metre at the exit of curve 16 and a change in the ice profile.
Even before the crash, several athletes had questioned the safety of the ultra-fast course. On Friday, a female Romanian luger suffered concussion.
I have to aggree that we might be correct in saying the luger may be at fault for this accident. Consider any sport that is dangerous, especially Formula 1 or the WRC. Put an idiot in a car and he will return in a can. Even pros die and the course is not to blame, look at Laguna Seca! The designer of this course has done many Luge pistes and no-one has ever come off a luge in 20 years (thats what he said, not me). Personally, I don't believe the course is to blame directly. It offers the ability to reach those speeds and if you are experienced enough then maybe you should go for them. I'm not insensitive, I feel for this guy and congratulations too him for reaching the world level and representing his country. Well done!+2
Dude, hes going down on a peace of wood with ice skates on it.
They should pad all the fucking poles. Incase someone does crash. No one plans to crash. But it still happens doesnt it.
To say hes at fault for crashing when it is part of the sport is stupid.
Its all the tracks fault for totally disregarding saftey.+1
To be honest I doubt whether padding the poles would have changed anything, hitting anything at that speed probably would have killed him. The padding would maybe have cut off about 1-2 mph which is around 1%. Btw you happen to be speaking to a Health and Safety inspector so I know how people go about these things. Now, they have run I think something like 3000 test runs and they had accidents under 3% thats 97% safe. I think they took enough into consideration, and statistically speaking (I'm sounding like a bastard here) since no-one has come off a luge in 20 years they would not plan on it happening, and especially at a point where the riders might be going slower than the rest of the course. In fact, there was a speed trap a few metres further down from where the accident happened. And the way he fell is outside the prescribed safety method. I'm not biased, I'm arguing against the 'hype' that usually comes out after somehting like this happens.+1
When you die or get killed for something you love doing especially for your country at the Olympics. That is honor. I'd want to go out the same way. For team, country, the world is watching. R.I.P. dude.+1
I for one feel sorry for his family , but Sledding down an Ice slope trying to go as fast as possible, does come with some risks, does it not? We here laugh when someone sticks there arm to close to a tiger, make fun of crazy drivers, watch horrific accidents on freeways, and these are mostly accidents in the making, but this video, he knew things can go wrong, he knew people in the past have died doing this, he made a conscience decision here, If we choose to laugh, snark, smirk, make funny comments, does that make us evil, or bad people?+3
I think it makes us better people. Death is the one thing none of us are getting out of, laugh at it whilst you can and hope that others piss themselves when it's your turn!+2
Hell, funny thing its the only reason I watch the openings was to see if it would compete with China's. It didn't. I don't even watch the Olympics ~ I'll see you guys at the 2010 World Cup in S. Africa.
i was reading that they are just going to put a wall where he crashed at and that is pretty pathetic. they should close it down and re-make the track so it is safer. R.I.P olypian.+1
Please tell me you have a handicapp. Fake? Yeah I guess the country of Georgia was just wearing black arm bands and having that moment of silence to keep up the joke you dumb fuck.+3
Now this is the story all about how My sled got flipped, turned upside down And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there I'll tell you how I took a bad turn and caught mad air In Soviet Georgia born and raised On the ice luge where I spent most of my days Chilling out, luging, relaxing all cool Taking Russian hostages inside a school When a couple of Reds, they were up to no good Drove Russian tanks into my neighborhood One separatist movement and my mom got scared And said "You're going to Vancouver to catch mad air I waited for my start and when it came near the course said "fast" and had a big concrete barrier If anything I could say that this track was rare But I though nah, forget it, Nodar, catch air! I slid up to turn number seven or eight And I yelled to my trainer "Comrade, it's hard to steer" Flew into a wall and I was finally there Killed my self while trying to catch mad air+4
Well gee, let's see, he was traveling at 90-100 miles an hour with no protection (At that speed a helmet won't do shit for you) This was like being in a motorcycle crash, only worse. At the area he flipped over It looks like a crew was erecting the rest of the guard rails. I smell a pending lawsuit.
It was an instant death. Whatever he hit knocked him out cold.
k, yes, Im sorry someone died... how retarded is it to have steel I beams next to the track.. but I have to say it... The time is now One-O-Clock.. DING!
