Neg me if you like but I find it hard to muster up some sympathy for the miners. Storming a police line, already nervous and armed with assault rifles, is not a wise thing to do. And they were not storming to embrace and say "howdie buddie", they were swinging machetes and spears.
    • bobster | 9 months ago | +11
Especially after they had killed two cops preceding this
    • Wagingwetard | 9 months ago | +4
Yep, I said that the other day when it was posted.. these guys were already killers and were carrying machetes and possibly two guns from the cops they killed.. the police tried to play nice the first two days and get them to disperse because they were still under a mutually agreed upon contract.. we saw what that got them..

Read up on African history before passing any judgement on these people. How long would you let yourself be exploited and abused before taking up arms?
      • BlueDick | 9 months ago | +2
I LIVE in Africa Sir, all my life, in this country where the shit happened. The miners work for a British owned mine. And they have the right to strike - no dispute about that. But why take firearms, machetes and clubs along if they were supposed to demonstrate/strike peacefully?

I do'nt know if you are self-employed, but if not, consider going to your boss and threatening him at gunpoint for a raise. See how that tuns out.
        • CrawdaddySupreme | 9 months ago | +3
Obviously you only know the British version of African history - "sir". Take off your blinders and look at the reality of the real bloody history of British brutality and oppression in 3rd world countries.

I too have worked in Africa my friend, and out of all the corporations and contractors and etc that had locals working for peanuts, the British bosses were ALWAYS the ones that mistreated the workers the most - always.
          • BlueDick | 9 months ago | +1
Plus 1 to you Sir, fully agreed.
But you still can't kill people for paying low wages. Do something else to make a living. Unfortunately Africans in general don't see it that way.

You can't view this event through a modern lens and compare their life experience to anyone growing up in a 1rst world life . I vividly remember 9 year old girls playing with homemade dolls in the dirt asking soldiers as they passed by if they wanted to have some fun; I goddamn broke my heart. There is NOTHING else for africans except being exploited for their brawn or their bodies.

To understand why they behave the way they do you have to look at the decades of hell they've lived through because of the British, French and Dutch.
          • BlueDick | 9 months ago | +1
And I do not want to make this into a British-Are-Shits thing. Nobody forces anybody to work for them. Not anymore.
            • CrawdaddySupreme | 9 months ago | +1
I would have to disagree on that one. Working for a shit boss OR starve to death - opportunities in Africa do not grow on trees.
              • friendlygarfield | 9 months ago | +1
Crawdy - lived most my life here - but traveled enough of the world to know that there are many other lands with poor ,hungry jobless people too
where the European (colonist ) has moved out - new colonists came from the eat (mostly Indian and Chinese)
the plight of the African has remained the same - just now they cannot call it racist because skin colour is about even

coming back to this post - it was not really a "strike "
more like a wildcat strike (unions did not go to boss/management ) workers did
                1) days prior to Thursday bloody event - 10 died of which two cops were hacked to death and their firearms taken (without any reasoning or reprisals )
2)local Sangomas(witchdoctors) had made muti for these protesters - totally fucking their minds up with words of 350% pay increase
                3) even without the firearms these guys had with them - the sheer number of lethal weapons in their hands would cause 99.99% of all men to be nervous or scared when charged
                shooting them hence was understandable

1st and last lines seam to fit NMF's post nicely, least they did for me :)

Read somewhere that Sony are shooting Q3/Q4 this year, but will it be District 10 or District 8 I dont know...

      • bobster | 9 months ago | +2 -4
On a personal level I hate that movie. Also it's spelled 'fok' not fook
        • Wagingwetard | 9 months ago | +1 -3
I'm with ya, it was a good concept, but poor execution..
    • mammarysex | 9 months ago | +1
Lord fucking Gawd I love that movie.
The only criticism I actually have is the number of times "fook", "fookin" etc., came out of Wikus' mouth.

      I want an exosuit

    • SlinkySkin | 9 months ago | +6

That one dude was still moving at the end why didnt they at least tase him,he looked like he was trying to carve a stick,,I heard the one unarmed guy say I left my Assult Rifle on the trunk of my patrol car....DAMN...
  • irishjohn80 | 9 months ago | +4
The were striking miners, the cops claimed self defense. link here
    • CaptainFlyscratch | 9 months ago | +1
I am in South Africa now. I saw this on the news here and there is more to it than cops killing black Africans. The Miners were seen practising the attacks with machetes and guns, then they advanced on the cops. The cops used rubber bullets first then they switched to live ammo when they were charged.

I'm certainly no expert on South Africa, but I have been fortunate enough to visit there a few times, toured eight of the provinces, hunted there, my best friends in the world live there. In short I love the country nearly as I do my own, but I have learned one thing that always holds true. Anything you say about SA is typically an oversimplification of the truth. They have the same problems and worries that we do here in the States, just magnified. It's a complicated place created by a complicated history, and it's not going to get better very quickly. On the other hand I did have to chuckle just a little at the white cop that was backed up against the front side of that vehicle, and was kind of scrunching as close to it as he could because some of those other fellas behind him were shooting past him in a rather callous and haphazard manner.

I thought it was an OSHA meeting..
  • deleted | 9 months ago | +3
Damn. I have no clue what happened here...and I'm sure the official story will be very pretty, but I don't see anything readily recognizable as a weapon.
    • imurdaddy | 9 months ago | +1
they had spears and clubs and tried to attack the officers...self defense
    • BlueDick | 9 months ago | +3 -2
CNN and all the major international TV networks were running the story and showing videos. The TV crews also spotted weapons, including firearms, among the miners. There are several other videos available on the net I believe.

Could somebody please explain to me why I get negged for stating the truth?
        • BlueDick | 9 months ago | +2
*stating the truth* = pointing out the facts
          Sorry I'm not English speaking.

Shit got real - whatever occurred or who is at fault is too early to say
the mine management had not yet got word that it was a pay dispute as a new union is wanting to get in - this started out (days ago ) as dispute between two unions
for workers to loose their life for a job is ..........
    • BlueDick | 9 months ago | +6
My 2c: They have the right to strike. They have the right to quit their job. They (the mine workers) do not have the right to kill anybody in a pay dispute. Two policemen on patrol were hacked to death there days before and their firearms taken.

BD - this scene brings back many memories when i was in uniform
those days when we wanted to shoot "racist " would have been our label
today when the uniforms are Africans - looks like blame is not to be placed ?
yes in my day i used my rifle as a baton and broke many bones to save myself and get the hell out of those situations - wanting to shoot and shooting is a whole different thing
here the cops was right to shoot - just how many firearms was in that crowd of "strikers ( more like a linch mob )
but yet i see some workers that just followed like sheep - loosing their life wanting to work - shit happens
        • Wagingwetard | 9 months ago | +3
Friendlygarfield being not so friendly with the butt of a rifle.. say it ain't so..
          • friendlygarfield | 9 months ago | +4
Wag - me is beary friendly - until it is my skin or someone else's
i prefer to keep my skin on and without getting new holes made in it - sadly i confess - i was but a kitten in those days
            • Wagingwetard | 9 months ago | +3
Rough situations like that at an early age build character.. more than likely majorly contributing to who you are today.. embrace it..

As a South African it is sad to see that most people have no clue as to what we have gone thru the past years of slauther and killings on a daily basis. Out numbered 10 to 1 by blacks that don't give a fuck about anything or making things beter for the future. All you assholes that don't come from SA should get more educated about what has really been going on!
