It is known as the "mimic octopus"... it was discovered in 1998 off Indonesia. This octopus has the remarkable ability to change its shape and color to imitate other species which are poisonous. Among them: in the second picture, a Lionfish. The third picture a flatfish, and the last a snail. Scientists had a difficult time identifying this octopus because they always assumed it was another creature. +2 reply

According to National Geographic, they also imitate sea snakes. This creature is so intelligent it even changes what it shapes to in respect to what species are hunting nearby! For example, when the octopus was attacked by damselfishes, the octopus assumed the form of a sea snake, the natural enemy of the damselfishes! reply

Yea I didn't either. I mean looking at the pictures I can't even see how they change their arms like that. But, it's been well-documented in science and has been published in scientific journals. Strange, but true! reply

Just to stirr uop the sea bed a little - Although it is often supposed that octopi is the 'correct' plural of octopus, and it has been in use for longer than the usual Anglicized plural octopuses, it in fact originates as an error. Octopus is not a simple Latin word of the second declension, but a Latinized form of the Greek word oktopous, and its 'correct' plural would logically be octopodes. reply
