According to Lt. Donald Whitehead, the two men were robbing an upstairs apartment at 920 E. Sycamore St., when police arrived.

Officer Chad VanCamp was met by a man armed with a handgun as he approached the apartment. VanCamp ordered the man to drop his weapon twice before the man raised his weapon toward him. The three-year veteran officer then fired, striking the man once in the chest.

Police Chief Russell Ricks said Tuesday the man remained in critical condition in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Officers planned to visit the hospital in an attempt to identify him.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Whitehead said.

"I’m hoping to be able to identify him [Wednesday]," he said.

Meriweather was arrested at the scene on misdemeanor charges of false informing and possession of marijuana. He was further charged Tuesday with attempted robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class A felony. He is being held at Howard County jail on a $150,000 bail.

Police closed the crime scene around 3 a.m. Tuesday, Ricks said, recovering cash and drugs thought to be related to a robbery.

Several bullets were found at the scene and sent to be analyzed, he said.

There were three people inside the apartment at the time of the robbery. Among them was John Cox, 47, who police found suffering a head wound at the scene. Cox told police that the men who were trying to rob him of cash hit him in the head. He is expected to be released from the hospital today.
