If more people carried guns some if not most of those 32 kids would be alive today. You think police can protect you? They were on site when 30 died, how many did they protect? If you want a gun you go to the police and they help you. Apparently they like shooting - funny that. They recommend you join a club or get a collectors license to get the heavy shit which is more fun. For those who love guns and have the wherewithal to go through the testing then you are just as well off as in America with the exception of having to deal with crack heads wanting a fix who are armed with more then a syringe. I admit, all I know about that side of things in the US is what I have seen on 'cops' and I know that is not representative, but it is shit you don't really have to deal with. reply |

Criminals might occasionally use a sawn off shotgun - a few times a year in a country with 20m people and I am sure their are weapons going around underground but they won't have much and they keep VERY quiet about it. Junkies never have guns, nor to gangs and there just isn't any gun crime. Pot is de-criminalised but it is illegal to sell and yes that stuff is easy to get, but that doesn't equate because nobody buys pot to kill someone and if you don't need a gun to defend yourself - we don't then why would you want one. | I lived in Brum (UK). That place has gone to shit, but I guess it was worse in the Idustrial age, when everybody worked. There was a lot of gun crime mainly because of the black gangs and not the least because people from different cultures don't get along in the UK. Europe in general is made up of closed societies. I think of the fifty posts about guns one has said it wouldn't have happened. That is just stupid. America would be better off without guns - sure. Would they miss them, in case an actual reason to bare arms actually happened, maybe. I don't know. Would England be safer if the average Jo had a gun, hmmm. | All your points are good except that guns are fucking good at killing. You aim, pull the trigger and bang = dead. Take guns away and you still have other weapons but at least you can run. Take away sharp weapons and your going to need to have ninja skills to kill someone who is fighting back. I have never been attacked with a weapon, but I have been in hundreds of fights. It is not uncommon to fight a guy and see him later and have a drink, but I doubt I would have such a relaxed attitude toward a guy who just put me in hospital from a distance. I do not want to tell you how you should run your country. I understand your first point. I expect it is laregly a non-issue, but from the point of view as an outsider, in my experience tighter gun laws would make a lot of people better off. I don't have a moral stance on the issue. I shoot kangaroos for fun. I hope you can treat this as friendly advice. If you can tell me a way to keep guns away from nut cases, then I am listening. reply |

| Encourage your government to look at other countries that don't have the same problems, decide what they are doing right and impliment some reforms. If my suggestions are worth anything, I'd suggest doing it in stages (1) Remove any weapon that is not meant for self defence - ie no automatics (2) Make the testing criteria more stringent. Get people to attend a course before they can be issued with a licence (That should weed out a lot) (3) Educate the masses about how useless pistols are and make them very hard to get, ie that you belong to a gun club. (4) Hobble the gun lobbiests (if it wasn't neccessary in an earlier stage). (*) Outcome, much less weapons being bought and a lot less shops selling them and hopefully the perception that guns are fucking dangerous and need to be handled responsibly. reply |

| This is the way it is. Gun control in most parts of the U.S. sucks. The reason why this asshole got hold of his is because in Virginia you don't have to pass a mental stability background check in order to get a gun. In other parts of this country, if you even committed assault, you can't get a firearm. Yes, having guns is our right, but it's also a privilege. If there's one thing that needs to be done it isn't banning all firearms, it's making a hard to pass personality/criminal background check. Also cracking down on any and all black market weapons, because that's where gang members get there guns. The only problem is that an operation like that would take the full cooperation of the police and the public, it would also require tactics banned by the ACLU, who have effectively made the police forces around this country impotent. You want gun violence to drop in this country? Stop defending criminals and start enabling or own police. They're there to protect us, let them do their jobs. reply |
