Affliction | 3 years ago | +26Nigeria is the biggest producer of oil in Africa. It produces 2.4 million barrels a day. Most of the oil is produced in the Niger Delta. The major oil companies working there are Shell, Mobil, and Chevron. The oil has been flowing for over 50 years. Nigeria should be the richest country in Africa, but instead it is one of the poorest, 70% of the people in Nigeria live in poverty (on less than 1$ a day) while the oil companies continue to get richer. None of the oil money is used to improve their area by making schools or roads, etc. When the people in the Niger Delta region protest, the police or military arrest and torture them. Over 50,000 people have been killed by the government. The oil companies know about this, but continue paying the Nigerian government large amounts of money to protect their oil wells and refineries. When oil is drilled, natural gas is produced. The oil companies simply release it into the air or burn it making continuous flares that smoke 24/7. The flaring gasses in Nigeria are the biggest single source of greenhouse gasses on Planet Earth. People have gotten so angry that groups from the Niger Delta have kidnapped workers from the oil companies. They ask for money, but they also want people to listen to them and pay attention to the problems the oil companies are causing. Amazingly, finding valuable natural resources in a country can actually make poverty worse.

"Cap the pipe and use the gas" - They are currently spewing raw methane into the atmosphere, when they are not piping and using it. Methane is a greenhouse gas and will heat the climate in it's current wasteful release.2. "Great fuel and cleaner than oil" - are you really going to refute this statement? If so, you truly are a cunt.3. "Why waste when you can make money from it?" - well, what else is there to say? They are surrounded by impoverished nations that need cheap fuel - natural gas is cheap - they don't pump (no special machinery required) it as it is a by product of the oil bearing strata. It is easily transportable as well (further reducing the operational cost).Further;1. creates less carbon dioxide per BTU than any other carbon based fuel2. burns without soot or sulfur dioxide3. has available technology for use at all levels of consumption4. does not pollute soil or groundwater if released5. can be made from a variety of wastes6. you are a stupid prick and need to reel yourself in before you make a further cunt of yourself.7. I research EVERYTHING before posting...if I don't already have an understanding of it first.
