Police opened fire on dog after it reacted angrily when officers approached homeless owner who appeared to be having a seizure. Star, the pit bull shot in the head by police in the East Village Monday, is now in â%u20AC%u0153critical but stable condition,â%u20AC animal control officials said. Animal Care & Control was caring for the wounded pit bull, but an agency spokesman refused Tuesday to further describe Starâ%u20AC%u2122s condition.     No worries. There are still people out there that believe it's the job of law enforcement to just 'take it'...usually those that have been arrested. The cop was protecting himself and the crowd. If the dog was aggressive towards the cop then the dog would have been towards any one else. How is ems/fire dept even suppost to do their jobs and help the homeless man if the dog won't let anyone near the man? The cop did what was right

  Yep im a rent-a-cop I work at a government building during the week and a mexican tejano club on the weekends. At the club everyone talks shit, mocks us, and tries to start shit with us, but when they are getting their asses kicked they want us to save their asses. Everyone there hates us but when its their ass on the line they think we are their personal body guard.

I'm a dog owner and I think the right thing was done there, the dog went for the cop the cop had to protect himself there, It wasn't nice to hear the dog cry i got to admit very upsetting to hear

  I understand that many homeless people keep dogs as a form of protection...And I believe there are many,many other breeds that would act like this,not just pits..Whether or not this person was really homeless,who knows..Most dogs are protective and can sense when there is a problem with their owner,especially a physical one..Many dogs are protective of their home and family...This dude may not have had either...It's actually very rough for a dog to live on the streets with someone...The dogs have no real "territory" to call their own...I find no fault with the police,and clearly the dog tried to bite a bystander.,..We have always had dogs and I believe many of them as nice as there were,would act like this if someone in my family was walking them and they became unconscious...Contrary to what many believe,pit bulls are not the only protective dog out there...At the end of the day I honestly believe that's really all this dog was doing...

If you look just as the dog is being shot by the officer on the left, the officer on the right sprayed some mace (easier to see in the full video).

Also, the dog had a history of being overprotective and biting people. The man is homeless and often abuses drugs, his friends know not to go near him when he is passed out because the dog will bite them and has bitten them before. The man was arrested after the shooting due to a previous open warrant for an open container charge.

  Doesn't matter, from a legal point of view even a poodle could be considered a threat if it runs at you because diseases such as rabies can be much deadlier than the bite itself. Though the owner can, and probably will, take the police department to civil (not criminal) court to get as much money out of them as possible. From a personal point of view, I find nothing wrong with this. I doubt the dog was charging at him to say hello.

I think they should have tasered the dog. There was really no need to shoot it with a gun. But sometimes it's hard to think fast in those kinds of situations, so the police officer simply did the first thing that came to mind.
