Excellent post, Angstrum. I don't have words to describe the emotion that poem made me feel other than to say THANK YOU to each and every person who fights/fought for the freedoms that we enjoy.
yes the freedom that way have, to enjoy and waste, to polish and tarnish, to use for good and to use for evil ( thinking Brittney spears and Justin timberlake here) all has been earned by those that serve, that surrender their youth , thier innocence, and sometimes their life so that we can have a chance at freedom and a chance for happiness. Real heroes walk in the world, our soildiers
But those who protest are protesting against the war, not the soldiers. Even though a lot of ppl thought the hippies during vietnam were worthless I think they proved valuable in putting pressure on the politicians (why don't they get their fat asses out there and fight) to end the conflict and bring our soldiers home. Now don't take that the wrong way I'm definetly not the kind of person whose on the extreme left or even the left at all, all politicians regardless of their political affiliation are scum in my opinion, but if I thought protesting would help to bring back one of my best friends whose over there you bet your ass I would.

personally,i wouldnt have thanked any protest that could have got me out of some of the holes ive been in-i thank my training, those that taught me and those who've stood back to back with me when shit hits the fan. i was taught to fight, taught to fight well-it was my job,my choice to join up and follow orders-sometimes those orders are hard to comprehend but at the end of the day-it was my job. my view-if you cant take the heat-stay out of the fucking kitchen.
I think we all agree that it is politicians who are to blame. Soldiers do what they have to, and to scapegoat them is either 1) stupid 2) unfair or 3) easy.
I don't know about "not against the soldiers" bit... Whenever there's a big protest you'll always get a couple of people holding slogans like "bring our troops home... preferably in body bags!" I don't know how that's NOT against the soldiers. And don't say that's just a few idiots out of a crowd of goodies - it's not like anyone stands up to them or tells them to leave. Truth be told, today's pacifists are actually some of the most intolerant people around.
but you know, the vietnam protestors, while they inspired great music, never ever treated the soldiers with respect or decency. Im old enough to remember returning vets trying to reacclimate and being just shit on by people their own age. Sad stuff. And waht is really amazing is that if you look at the after effects of our withdrawal from Vietnam, the rise of the kulam rouge ( sorry mispelled it) of the killing field fame, the rise of the current crop of anti american politician that have infected all levels of polotics and like a cancer they work continually to undermine the US and the western world, because they have nothing but contempt for our military and our constition.
you cant protest the war but not the soldiers. they are the war the live it and die it. so you can stay home and cry. it is a all VOLINTEER. we all want loved ones home but do the want to come home before the job is done? we have a choice fight war in other lands or sit back and waite for it to come to us. you cant stop war!
I have to admit i`ve always been one to be like "what the fuck we are doign there" BUT i watched a documentary of what the americans and brits! have to go threw and wow. those are real men, they have to look in the eyes of the enemy and treat them with respect knowing full well they`d happly blow them up. now that is a real man. all i can say is well done ur more than i could ever wish to be. and my heart and thanks go out to those brave men who protect us.
the documentary u watched was an American goverment propaganda agains ur mind....

i may be neg for this but i feel it has to be said. i did 8 years and i would not trade one day back for a normal life. i loved every day when when i was pissed off and livit about some of the orders i had to follow. but at the days end or when a certain task was over. i realized it was for a reason. to keep my ass alive when the shit hit the fan. now alien has a right to say what he wants and not be neg because he does not agree with what we say. we fight on our own free will to protect his right to freedom of speech and his other freedoms. but by bashing him and wisheing death to him cuz he is not tatolly seeing this your way is us being just as bad as we think he is. he is only voicing his opinion with is the freedom i and all the others volunteered to help protect. when i was dodging granades and moter rounds. i was not thinking damn bush/clinton/cic. i was think we have to stop this madman before he hurts another human being , weather it is one of us or one of his own country men. to be cont...
As he stood at the Gates, St. Peter called out... Another Soldier Reporting... He served his time in hell

the majority of my friends over there and they all agree that what their doing sucks but at least they did something!
My neighbor is over there right now and he just a kid. End this bullshit and bring them home. I can respect the freedom he's fighting for just as much while he's defending our fuckin' border right here in my back yard. What the hell do I care if them people want to kill each other over there? If they were helping an alliance then I'd understand but they are just acting police over there. England needs help, lets go. Isreal gets attacked, ok. But who really gives a rats ass about a culture that's so backwards they give their kids ak-47's as their first toy. Fuck 'em! BRING OUR BOYS HOME! I can support him just fine when I reach over the fence to shake his hand!

Well my first gift from dad was his 30-06, our we just as backwards? I agree that we shouldn't have gone nor be there now. But the chaos there is western created.
Correct.. treated like scum..until they arrive back in the body bag ..then they are heroes..the poor families get little or no help with life afterwards..meanwhile the political morons sit safely in their ivory towers. Ship the politicians over there and save millions of pounds in taxpayers money..the conflict would be over by the weekend!!
Gordon Brown wouldnt be able to fit his head in a helmet!

Just came across this Post. Soldiers get paid to eat out the Shit, the Politicians have produced. That is sad. I am not Anti-American, I am Anti-Bush. He invaded Iraq for one reason only and this is Oil. And now the Soldiers have to eat this. The main reason for many Europeans to dislike the new American Way of Life is, that Bush got rid of most of the things, America stoud for during WWII. No freedom of speach, no freedom of choice. And that he works in alliance with some of the worst Enemies to Democracy. Hence, what do you think Saudi-Arabia stands for? Remember where Bin Ladin came from? Remember who paid most of the MoFu´s?
id Bin Laden gets killed in the cross-fire... then do we really give a shit what the real reason we went was? I'm sorry.. but whatever the cost, 15,000 men, women, and children died because of someone else's opinion about the country they live in.. not because of an individual judgment about thier own lives
