Whoever knowingly goes into these nuclear reactors to do their job in order to save peoples lives, regardless of their fate, are true brave heros in my book.

The sad part is, I doubt they knowlingly went in to clean up. They were probably misinformed on what the risks were. All you have to do, is take a look at russia's history. They were willing to do whatever it takes, at whatever the cost, to one up america.

Enough radiation remains in Chernobyl to kill off ALL life in Europe...The only thing containing that death sentence- the sand cement and glass sarcofagus- and it is rapidly decaying! Have a nice day!

Thats a pretty biased view of the Cold War. Both polarisations went to any length to again advantage over the other. The US were just as bad. Furthermore the Chernobyl disaster came about due to shoddy maintenence and cost cutting measures, behaviour prevelent in organisations which operate in market-based economies. Think abit broader and look into the mirror of our own societies before you accuse our vodka infused brothers of being heartless

actually. i think u'll find it was due to bad design and operating instructions that caused a major malfunction during a test. the test was delayed and performed at night when there were not properly trained staff working. the test was performed then instead of waiting... as they wanted to get it done before a party conference the next day.
the station was only a couple of years old when it exploded so would not have needed too much maintenance.

i watched a thing about it a while ago. there were about 600,000 liquidators (clean-up crew) 60,000 are dead

hmmm 10% immediate casualties? I thought it would have been higher. I dont envy the commanders who had to give those orders... I wonder how high the cancer rates and radiation sickness levels were? 70-90%? No one would have got out of there unscathed

It had to be done. In most cases all of them knew that they were dead men but thought themselves to be patriots. Rightly so I might add.

well what do you expect from the then USSR? The USSR leaders have always forced soliders to do really stupid and almost always suicidal things at best.

To make a soldier do the stupidest things in the world all you have to say to them is that "its their patriotic duty" or "do it for your country" and the dumbasses will do it.

Then dont expect anyone to back you either. No one loves a soldier till the enemy are at the gate

he's just stating a fact. soldiers are told to jump and they ask, how high. a good soldier does what is told without question. even if it's against their own neighbors.

Sadly chernobyl and a huge area around there is still a wasteland...Makes you wonder why we still use nuclear power

Plant workers in Japan are currently inside the reactor knowingly dying to save others. Who said all asians have small balls.
  • GFB85 | 2 years ago | +3 -1
They did not all die. Some did, others had chronic diseases for the rest of their lives. As now like in Japan, these were volunteers and were paid for their services. And yes - your chances of survival increase the faster you run! Time Distance and shielding is how you protect yourself from radiation I work in a nuclear power plant. This stuff was studied and shown to us time and time again. I will be there doing this if I have to.
