From Wikipedia: Stephen Gammell (b. February 10, 1943) is an American illustrator of children's books. His awards include the Caldecott Medal.
Stephen Gammell grew up in Iowa. His father, an art editor for a major magazine, brought home periodicals that gave Stephen early artistic inspiration. His parents also supplied him with lots of pencils, paper, and encouragement. He is self-taught.
He started his career with commercial freelance work, but became interested in children's book illustration. His first book, A Nutty Business, was published in 1973. Since then, he has illustrated over fifty titles.
He is particularly well-known for the surreal, unsettling illustrations he provided for Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of horror short stories, still a favorite in adolescent fiction.
Stephen and his wife, Linda, a photographer, live in St. Paul, Minnesota. He works daily in his studio, located over a restaurant.

nice but you missed the post by 4 years: Original Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark art post on H666

yes, but it's also 4. years. ago. Unless someone knew who he was, they would have no idea what to search for to find it. And since most members have not been on here for years, I'd wager that they'd never seen this before, therefore, new to a solid majority of the population. :)

Wasn't this also posted a few months ago?

couldn't find it when searching. if it was, it's not under stephen gammell or scary stories or creepy art or scary art or freaky art or tell in dark.

I think it got removed or it could have had shitty tags. I like the artwork and the book ... it does resurrect suppressed memories from my childhood though

Didn't mean to sound like a dick because we've all been burned by people not tagging posts to the full extent

True. And I didn't take it in the dickish way. So no worries. :)

This artwork was a big inspiration for me. The original book just happens to be on my desk right now.

i liked the book too. it was weird to have my daughter bring that book home from school a few months ago.

Not weird, awesome! It means she's properly following in your footsteps. I can't wait until I have kids who bring home weird ass books.

How do you the Mexican drug lords learned some of their tricks? they read the book, saw the illustrations and thought "that's a fan-fucking-tastic way to freak people out."
        • aliceink | 1 year ago | +1
Fuck, dude that connection makes SO MUCH SENSE! I swear to god we've seen some posts of Mexican drug lords that look oddly similar...

and those mexican drug lords are no joke. they killed one of my uncles and threatened my father. he had to get out of the country for a few months in order for shit to calm down... now he's fixing his visa to come live with us here.

No way, that's pretty fucking serious. I'd be scared to say the least, we've all seen some of the things they're more than capable of doing O.O

Oh trust, I know. One of my good friends from Hawaii moved to El Paso Texas and he ended up having one of his coworkers, who lived in Juarez, move in with him, as an illegal alien, because shit was getting serial dangerous. They both ended up moving to New Mexico eventually. But I am pretty sure the drug lords don't just magically think up some of this stuff. I am pretty sure they see creepy videos and pictures and drawing and paintings and think to themselves "genius. Let's do it."
