I agree that to ME, those punishments seem lopsided and unfair. My point is that we are making judgements on their punishments based on our values, not theirs. If the people of Indonesia considered molesting a child as severe as smuggling a few pounds of blow, the punishment would adjust accordingly. We can judge the laws and punishments of foreign lands through our own moral lenses, and we will come away with the idea that the people of those lands are "insane", but that is ethnocentrism: Judging our own values and culture as superior to all others. And that is why (ideally) there are imaginary lines in patches of dirt- To create separation from people who live different ways and hold different beliefs.

If this had been YOUR family member, and the cop had opted to go outside and wait for SWAT, and your family member was killed by the robber in the meantime, would you still think that was a proper course of action? And if the girl hadn't been hit, we would be calling this cops actions heroic. Cops are the "thin blue line", and there is no place for passing the buck. The cop had a victim in immediate danger, and had a weapon drawn on himself. No question about it- He did the right thing. It is unfortunate the girl was killed, but in my estimation, nothing should have been done differently.

This is the same argument used when cops kill a bystander during a pursuit. They are chastised for pursuing the criminal, but if they let him go instead of chasing him, and he proceeded to kill someone, they would be chastised for NOT pursuing him. There is no way for law enforcement to win with some people.

Unfortunately for this woman, it is the opinion of the Indian courts, and not yours, that will decide her sentence. I think people should have religious freedom, but that does not mean I'd go to Iran and try to open a protestant church and hand out "have you found Jesus" fliers. Our personal views don't decide the laws and consequences of foreign countries.

It seems to me that the cop was concerned with the safety of the girl- Up until the point the robber turned his gun on the cop. At that point, his actions were all about self preservation. As far as the "Mag Dump" method- I saw a documentary several years ago about law enforcement's shift from shooting to disable vs shooting to kill. There are way too many things that can happen if you don't kill an armed suspect, so they don't take the chance- fire every round you have- can't do more than that. The robber had the girl in a headlock- That would put her head right in the vicinity of center mass- I'd say the cop did well hitting her with only one shot.
It's easy to second guess these guys, but I can't see anything he should have done differently at the time.

The NJ laws listed prohibit persons from possessing a firearm without proper permitting. It also deals with sawed off shotguns and machine guns, armor piercing bullets and body armor. They are basically talking about confiscating guns from anyone not legally allowed to possess them, or confiscating weaponry that is already illegal.

I'm no lawyer, but that sounds pretty on the level to me.

No, I'm not a cop, nor do I even personally know any cops. I've even been on the wrong side of the law before, and paid a few years of my life for it. I just hate the idea of society sliding downward to the point where criminals (suspected or proven) are assumed to be the good guys. People teach their kids that cops aren't shit, and then wonder why their kid gets his ass kicked for running his mouth and being obstinent and combative when being questioned for something minor. I've been arrested, searched, hauled in for DUI, public intox, disorderly conduct, A&B, driving without a lisence(all different occasions) and I've never had a problem- because I've always been compliant. There is a time and place to claim your innocence, and it's not on the street. Cops don't care about guilt or innocence, and they shouldn't- that's the court's job, not the police's. Their job is public safety, and if keeping the public (and themselves) safe means busting a suspects head to get him to comply with arrest, then so be it.
