At least 33 people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in a shooting rampage at Virginia Tech university.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Virginia Tech students described the mayhem on campus on Monday and criticized officials for not shutting the university down quickly enough after 33 people were killed including a gunman.

* Andrew Gisch, a second-year student, was walking across a quadrangle listening to his iPod when he heard "a big bang."

"I recognized the sound of gunfire but was mostly confused .... I looked around at the other students on the drillfield, most of them confused like myself....it clicked in everyone's head immediately the sound we heard was a gun shot and everyone started running. I went back to the dorm, locked the door, and turned on the news."

* Daniel Smith said he was aware of shootings at other schools but he never thought it could happen at this university

It hits you in the heart. It's more of a shock to me because I'm an engineering major and when that list (victims' names) comes out, I know I'm going to see some friends on there and its scaring me inside right now."

* Jason Piatt criticized the way university officials reacted after the first shooting.

"I'm pretty outraged that someone died in a shooting in a dorm at 7 o'clock in the morning and the first e-mail about it had no mention of locking down the campus, no mention of canceling classes," Piatt told CNN.

"They just mentioned that they were investigating a shooting," he said. "That's pretty ridiculous. Meanwhile, while they sent out that e-mail, 21 people got killed."

• smith3247 posted 2 years ago rate it: good poor 1) how the f*** was he able to get a gun that quickly and with a history of mental instability how was he obtain a gun at all. 2)how was he able to effectively walk around for 2 hours without being stopped (how long does it acctually take to "lockdown" a university. 3)It is such a devastating thing to happen in a community, when you think it about it terms of economics, the people who where killed could have been earning in the future around £30000/$60000, that is around about £10000/$15000 in tax, multiply that by 32 each year and it is a large sum reply

And to the tax thing i'm not saying it wasnt a horrible event (which if u read carefully i did not say and i did not say anything to remove the unfortunate nature of these events) bt im just giving an dimension to the horrific nature to the event not only does it effect those directly invovled but the wider community aswell. As a man who has a background in economics these are things that do cross my mind, well excuse me for seeing the bigger picture. (P.S. They don't check for mental status... they check criminal background... and depending on the state, even one WITH a criminal background of a non-violent nature can own hunting rifles. reply

Where I live I can buy any gun I like but I need to belong to a club for a pistol and I don't know what I would to have to do to get an automatic. I have a rifle for 'hunting' and I needed to have a farmer write a letter and pass a safety test. It won't stop all the Cho's in the world but it will stop some and probably reduce them to having to reload every time they fire. It would definitely take a lot of guns off crims because they are not usually too smart and they would have a harder time. Just my two cents... reply
